Defend Venezuela against Imperialist Aggression

: Which Road, Cuba or Chile?

On Jan. 23, 2019, Juan Guaidó, the chairman of Venezuelan National Assembly, staged a coup, declaring himself president. Immediately after Guaidó's ridiculous “self-presidential appointment,” imperialist camps such as the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, and Canada and colonial regimes such as Ukraine, Brazil, Israel, and Colombia shamelessly declared their support for Guaidó. Their pretext is that Venezuelan presidential election, which was held seven months ago on May 20, 2018 and reelected Nicolas Maduro, a successor of Hugo Chavez, with 67 percent of the vote, was rigged.

Guaido's deranged declarations and coup attempts come as no surprise. It is just one of the options of U.S. imperialism's ‘regime change’ operation that has continued since Chavez was elected as a president in 1998 after winning the outright pro-U.S. proxy government. There was already an anti-Chávez coup in 2002, which was thwarted by the resistance of the working people, and since Maduro took power in 2013, blatant regime change operations such as economic blockade, social turmoil, and assassination attempts have been constantly being attempted.

After the collapse of the workers’ state Soviet Union in 1991, the US imperialism's policy of expanding its colonies was unleashed. Operations were carried out in Afghanistan 2002, Iraq 2003, Honduras 2009, Libya and Syria 2011, Egypt 2013, Ukraine 2014, and Turkey and Brazil 2016 to replace regimes that were not compliant on super-exploitation of imperialism with obedient subordinates. With economic blockade, massive false propaganda, financial and military support, pro-imperialist forces were united, riot-inducing, insurgency, coup, and direct invasion are the tools used in the abominable imperialist operation.

The imperialists always cite human rights, democracy, freedom, etc. However, it is well known that those “human rights, democracy and freedom” in the United States are already in disarray, and that “human rights, democracy and freedom” in those ‘regime changed’ countries have plummeted to hell, and that U.S. imperialism is behind the most barbaric regimes on Earth.

Though millions murdered and bloodsheds spread around the world, the war situation is not so favorable for US. The U.S. military is struggling in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. North Korea has successfully developed nuclear weapon and long-range missiles. Iran, a longtime thorn in the side of the Middle East, is still not compliant. The Venezuelan working people, who have suffered from the U.S. imperialist aggression for more than 20 years, are instinctively defending Maduro's regime against the U.S. imperialism, despite their bitter economic tyranny.

The Maduro regime, which succeeded Chavez, emerged on the back of the colonial working class and the oppressed people's struggle for national liberation, but it was a Bonaparteist capitalist government that tried to obstruct the socialist revolution and compromise with imperialism. They oppose imperialist looting of their own industries and tyrannical colonialism, but that does not lead to the abolition of private property which is the fundamental interest of the working people. As a result, even if the comprador capitalist class and landlords openly cooperated with imperialism and inflicted sabotage on the economy, their political and economic assets were not confiscated. They are enjoying their “democracy” to the fullest, freely contacting the U.S., causing economic hardship, inciting sedition and rioting. On the other hand, Chavez and Maduro have stopped the working class and peasants' struggle to occupy ‘factory and land.’

Regardless of who leads, Venezuelan and the world working people are fighting against the colonial invasion of American imperialism. U.S. imperialism is creating all sorts of horrors by causing conflicts around the world for the interest of very few financial capitalists. The victory of the Venezuelan people and the defeat of the U.S. and its servants will serve as an opportunity to advance the morale of the working people of the world against imperialism and capitalism and to change the force of relationship to their advantage.

Maduro regime is a capitalist one, though it is not compliant with imperialism. It does not engage in full nationalization of key national industries and confiscation of large land. It maintains a capitalist military system that is bound to be led by large capital. As a result, Maduro regime is opposed to the fundamental interests of the working class and small farmers, and for that reason it cannot attract the devoted support of the working people. Even if today's danger is avoided, nationalist left-wing regimes like Maduro could collapse due to cascading dangers from tomorrow.

Two examples in South America, Chile and Cuba, teach us a meaningful lesson in this regard. Despite blatant attempts by U.S. imperialism, including an attempted coup, and local comprador capitalists to overthrow the regime, the Allende regime, which blindly trusted the loyalty of its military by setting up a coalition government with capitalists, defying urgent demands of “total nationalization and arming workers,” finally collapsed in September 1973 by the second coup attempt. On the other hand, after the armed provocation of imperialism, including the 1961 invasion of Bay of Pigs, Castro's regime finally declared socialism and responded with “confiscation of large land, nationalization of key industries, organization of armed militia” and kept its victory alive.

The Venezuelan working class, along with Maduro government, should lead the poor peasants and the small self-employed and be at the forefront of an anti-imperialist united front. But the working class cannot have any illusions on Maduro regime. Maduro, like Chavez in the 1990s, is fighting anti-imperialism today, driven by the Venezuelan working people who remember the long-term horrors of imperialism. But the very fact that he is the head of the capitalist order will soon erode or hinder the struggle. That is why the Venezuelan working class systematically and politically prepare themselves to overthrow the bourgeois system later, while join Maduro's military united front today.

The “imperialist colonial invasion, crushing of regime change, arming the working class, nationalization of key industries, and confiscation of large land” is a major program that can deter coups and imperialist aggression, and this program can only be maintained by the working class. A revolutionary party based on Lenin and Trotskyism must be established in order to consistently carry out the program of victory.
